The classic offshore ocean race was particularly memorable in 2022 for its strong northerly winds that blew the fleet down the rhumb line in record time. I sailed on a J120, the ideal boat for carrying lots of sail and surfing the big ocean swells that started to pile up midway down the 640-mile course. We hit a top speed of 20.4 knots in Charlotte, but star navigator Stan Honey, driving his 50-year-old Cal 40 for the final time, surfed his way to 22 knots! My video recollection of NBR 2022 here.
